Kasagi's mother who lived in the first half of life in East Asia (Korea, Taiwan, Manchuria, Japan) before the war. Kasagi went to the site and continued to create works by intermingling old family photographs with current photographs taken. In the relativistic space-time system, "Mother's Showa" and "My Heisei" interact and a "third spectacle" rises like a revelation. A large collection of works is published at the beginning of Reiwa, which has been 21 years since Kasagi's mother passed away.

From the contribution of Shin'ichi Yamamuro, Professor Emeritus, Kyoto University:
Etsuko Kasagi’s book of photographs My Mother, the Stranger exerts a strange fascination.
Following Kasagi on her journey in search of her “unknown mother,” we are transported to unknown times and unknown places.
Spaces from the past and the present are intermingled and superimposed, and while they both must have existed somewhere, the result is a chronotopos (time and space) that is nowhere. Through non-existence, it exerts a powerful presence. By placing a world that should not exist right before our eyes, she seems to clearly show us a reality beyond the blurred, vague outlines of the visible world.
